But alas it was much too cold for me

And could not offer its company

So it snowed sparkles upon the ground

And called to me in a tinkling sound

As it played with freezing wind chimes

From a time when it had been invited in

And welcomed as summer breezes

Far away from winter's colds and sneezes

When it saw me at my window smiling

At the beguiling beauty it had bestowed

It went contentedly on its way

To poke round like a little mouse

And sneak about another house

Peeking very carefully in

Across the dark and lonely miles

Musings On Christmas...

If you have nothing else to give away for Christmas; no money to buy presents with -- don't grieve... you still have love to give, and love you'll receive in return. Christmas is not a date but a state of mine. No, it's not like it was when we were children; it's much better. The magic has grown within us for now we can appreciate its essence. The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree is the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other. So all grown up I will dream the dream of Christmas. I will go to sleep that little girl again with rosy cheeks and soft smooth skin, excited to know that once more I have awakened to a Christmas dawn. I'm still here... to love and be loved once again!

Yes, I have grown older and have many burdens to bear, but love weighs heavier on my heart than any grief I carry so it is love I will share.

Noon of Midnight...

Leaving me wrestling with store bought time

I stand in the glistening noon of night listening

To the muted hum of life barely hiding in the day

But in the hush of midnight wisdom comes

Whispering... wooing me to her hallowed halls

As night time falls with wild and wondrous delight

Mysterious magical voices call my spirit out of me...

The broken moon smiles at Heaven; frowns at Hell

Not all souls cherish the bed; only the dead or dying

Let me run in the night... hot breath playing on cold air

Nostrils flaring with dark hair streaming in wild winds

I search for love as for a black cat in a deep well

That isn't there, and I must truly tell you all for naught

I fought for it but it could not be stolen or bought

I borrowed it; wrapped it around me as a thin blanket

Almost enough to keep me warm but the chill remained

Just a glimpse of immortality do I spy before I see

Dawn breaking in and I awake daydreaming once again.

My poor little Humpty Dumpty Heart

All broken, wounded, and torn apart

No one can put it back together again

What a sin... what an awful shame

I fear that I must accept the blame

I was careless and fell off the wall

Damn near killed me that fateful fall

ALL the King's men; even the horses

Chipped in and tried but it was in vain

Nothing could put it back together again

I swear I think I heard them cry

So here I lie... scattered pieces all

They never said if Humpty was dead

Just that he could never

Be put back together again

So... here I am and here I'll stay

Shattered pieces of endless pain

I cannot explain how I fell or why

I only know that I remain

Upon the earth beneath the sky

Amongst the horses, amongst the men

And I cannot find a way

To become whole again

The fall I was eighteen

The blue tint of the ocean called us, we went
and never looked back. At Navy bootcamp the
California sun baked us, blistering our ears.
We folded tee shirts perfectly, thin, thick, thick, thin.

We built our bodies the Marine Corps way,
we did push ups knowing that the number of push
ups that a man can do is directly proportional
to what he has under him, pushing back up at him.

We swam like fish, even with our uniforms on.
And rose out of those pools wet and cold knowing
that we could survive. We graduated and went to
ships and manned the rails and swabbed the decks.

We mess cooked, studied hard and played hard.
We left the smell of the ocean in the beds of strange
girls, with their sensual kisses. Boys on the playground,
and if I could, I'd go back to that very fall all over again.

Wolf Hall - Hilary Mantel

A very good book and winner of the 2009 Man Booker Prize.
This is one of those books you can tell you are going to finish after reading the first couple of pages - the quality of writing stands out.
It tells the story of the rise of Thomas Cromwell and his relationship with Henry VIII. The background given on the times is gripping - the intrigues between different courtiers is contemporary.
A very good read indeed.

Guardian

Wolf Hall succeeds on its own terms and then some, both as a non-frothy historical novel and as a display of Mantel's extraordinary talent. Lyrically yet cleanly and tightly written, solidly imagined yet filled with spooky resonances, and very funny at times, it's not like much else in contemporary British fiction.

Mantel knows how to build a picture from the parts available, with nothing extraneous and everything layered. Here is Katherine – “as wide as she is high, stitched into gowns so bristling with gemstones that they look as if they are designed less for beauty than to withstand blows from a sword?…

Blank expressions, stark and bare

I care no more; a wounded soldier

The coal black night pressing in

Like a hidden shame, a forbidden sin

I strain to hear the lonesome sound

Of a distant train on a far off track

As the rain pours down, down, down

The wind wild and sweet
Whipped my gown around my feet
It's sultry scent was Jasmin laden
It bade me stay and while it played
It stirred the leaves of old Hickory trees
Simmering and shimmering
In searing waves of heat and hinted at relief
Little blue Chicory gloried in the shade
In the hot summer haze
Sunlight set the sky ablaze
There was no cure for
The desire of the day
No way to stop the fire
The Angels came
In their ecclesiastical attire
And prayed for Heaven's tears
To fall and save us all

Unlike most cultural festivals, this isn't a tourist attraction: my foreign accent has been a source of continuous excited curiosity. When I was a younger man, he did my thinking (got me into a lot of trouble).
She calls him Tricky Dick. Some times she calls him Dick Cheney, I guess
to let me and him know that, at best, he can only be the vice president.
She does my thinking for me now.

You know who I'm talking about. I tell her he likes it when she gives him a kiss,
sometimes she likes to give him a bite. I moan and tell her to speak softly into the microphone. She makes him feel better by calling him Little Richard, and talking to him with a breathy voice. Not because he is small, but because she is a nice girl and she knows how to drive a stick.

And dreams as cold and black as space

My grand old clock slew time
It ticked and chimed
My heart thumped loudly in tune
In time
Life passed by...
I waved to it and called to it
But it walked on by
With the merest glance, the slightest wave
It gave as if an afterthought
Time does not go though...
It remains and we must leave
While others grieve our passing and yet we live
This energy, this spark of fire, and flame

We are gone before we arrive and yet alive

Talking about up near Shreveport way,
or down in New Orleans,

sweat pouring off me
like steam, it was the

I thought it might have
been my daughters scream
It is late at night and she
is out in that dark harsh
world, though grown she
is still just a girl.

A thousand crimes
are committed against her
in my nightmares,
I tell her how it scares me
but like youth itself she
does not care. She can
not allow the fears of her
old man to restrain her.
If something happened
to her it would be my
negligence in not making
her see.

Fear not gentle reader
for I love her and know
that she is smart and will
do what is right. I taught
her these things myself,
but knowing that does not
serve to pacify the fears

I parted with a dream yesterday. I decided to finally tell it good-bye. It broke my heart and yet it was necessary. I dreamt alone really. It suddenly occurred to me that this then was the true heartbreak, and not as I had originally supposed, the fact that I could not have my dream; could not dream it into reality but that I dreamed it alone. Aloneness was the worst part of it all and so I let it go. I cried. Yes, I cried and I died a little inside. I suppose that some part of me will always feel the desire, though I would drive it far from me and never think on it again if I only could. I cannot blind myself; cannot go deaf, and cannot stop feeling with my hands or my heart. That would be death, would it not? So, I died a little yesterday and will die a little each day without my dream, without... Look into my eyes. Do you see the pain that shall never leave them or do I hide it well beneath the glimmers of pretense, the shine of disguise; the light of life that shines though the candle's wick is burning low...

I am terribly alone; a desperate sadness descends on me like a midnight mist of moon dust scattering the dark; shattering the night.

Mourning Glorys

The Mourning Glory's wear their hearts on their sleeves.

So do I. It is not hidden from your eyes what shines in mine.

I cannot cover the tracks of my heart. It sleepwalks in the night playing bittersweet melodies on its heavy harp - strands of passion floating through the air.

Do you hear its siren song soft and low?

I would draw you to my side... to my cool white bed.

My heart sleepwalks in dreams of you. I am beside you. I touch you -- a fleeting touch. Do you feel me? My gown brushes your arm; cool silk silver satin slowly slips across your skin. My lips touch your cheek -- ever so slight as a thought forgotten.

Does my scent stay with you in the darkness of the night? I warm your bed and yet...

Hold me as a dream, caress me in daydreams.

Breaths of life consume me...

Delusion of love

-- I see you wavering in a mirage; a hot desert dream. I reach for you and touch the wind.

I ache.

Wake me not. Forsake me not.

I am love... Waste me not.

Desire sweeps as a wildfire through my body -- sparking, burning into a blaze of mad desire... fire...

Waves of thrill build as I dream of you.

I wait... a slave to my craving. A fool of love. She schemes to have me. Enchantress of the soul. Make me whole.

Take me -- write me on your heart. Love does not care for right or wrong.

If I loved you more I could not bear the longing.

You are in my blood, my soul.

Shrink not from the tingle of my touch or the glow of my gypsy eyes. My very heartbeat is yours.

Secret Things...

I write you all my heart. It is the only pen I have.

Bright yellow butterflies light up the grass bringing a smile; bright yellow sunshine warms me.

A piece of the sun drips from the sky giving birth to a bright yellow Goldfinch. It sits still at my feet.

With a tilt of its tiny head it casts me a look of puzzlement and flies away.

My heart takes flight with it.

From a distance I feel a prayer; someone cares...

A prayer has sent an Angel to my side. Someone secret cares... I feel a prayer.

I hear a thousand Angels cry as the rain begins to fall. It is cool and wet on my hot skin. I raise my face to the sky and open my mouth to taste the calm.

From a distance I hear a whisper like an Angel's sigh... He'll hold you in the storm... Has Heaven sent a refuge? A Hero...

I feel your lips warm and wet. I taste your mouth and tingle with excitement. Taste me...

How long the night of hazy recollection. I dream...

An Angel flies, a Goldfinch flies, and my heart flies to you. I feel your heart at once tender and warm.

Angels whisper secrets to me. We smile together.

I am an Angel with a broken wing treading in forbidden places where Angels do not dare.

You will be there... waiting...

Angels whisper secrets the bright yellow butterflies carry in their wings.

Sing to me... play for me... love me in the dark and tell me secret things.

Lost...

We are lost -- those who love, truly love, without reservation, without thought of reward, and without censorship of society; who follow their hearts no matter the road, no matter the cost.

Love is a fool -- it is blind and strong; as strong as death. It cares not about seasons or circumstance when it comes knocking.

It is born of the spirit and lives in the soul. It is not fettered with bonds of flesh but is born in the body of us all.

Foolish love... mad desire, dark crimson elixir of life -- it beckons us to drink deeply.

We pretend to resist but in the night watches of the heart we cannot but heed its call. Only the flesh is restrained but the mind, the spirit, runs headlong into danger and thrills at the quest.

How sweet the potion. How drunk the spirit, how deep the desire, how insane, how heady... I cannot die to defeat you. I cannot live without you.

Beckon on sweet siren, as you will and as you must. I will lead a revolt against you. I will fight with the sword of my will and I will lose but fight I must and fight I will until my last breath, and then... oh then you will have me at last. At last...

Ever the Golden Key is lost... the Lady surrenders her quest. I fight no more. My sword is in its sheath. My cup empty. My throat dry from crying; my soul parched. My arms empty as a poured out flask. My lips untouched. My passion calmed by the white flag of my surrender.

My loneliness owns me and I die... alone. No one calls my name. It is unknown. A soul lost in the night. I wander alone -- battered and torn.

Life held its beauty time and time ago. Love has eluded me like a deer running wild in the forest just out of view -- and so it is and so it will be.

I have fought a good fight. I was brave and true. My sword holds no one's blood but my own.

Night has overwhelmed the sunlight I once loved. I am its mistress. I abhor the darkness that invades my soul but there is no one to make me whole. No other half completes me.

I compete no more. The door is slowly closing. It creaks and groans under the weight of my discontent. My dress is satin, lace, and pearls. It lies still about me, so still about me... so still.

Love lights the night like fireworks bursting in the sky; colors bright and brilliant; rockets shooting, bursting -- they scream to be heard and startle me out of nowhere and everywhere.

Love explodes the night into a thousand sparkles -- suddenly, unexpectantly. Delighted cries escape my lips as my eyes thrill at its beauty. The intensity takes my breath away.

Loves... come strongly to me in me. Surrounded by surreal electricity I sway to the music of my soul's delight. My body strains to meet your caresses. My ears strain to hear your sighs. Tender words fall like soft, misty rain whetting my appetite for more and more...

Love - sweet firewater in my mouth. My throat burns, hot belly, fire in my veins, firefly flickers in my eyes.

My heart cries out... only care for me -- this and nothing more. I searched for you in the full moons light, in the beacon of its glowing beams.

I walk the paths of life to search for you and finding you I waited... the lady waits... every the patient lady of love, ever the lover in the night, walking her paths of aloneness to find the oneness of her lover.

Waiting in the night wind. The scent of Jasmine in the air, flowers in my hair... My gown flutters wildly, torn in tatters by the dark wind of desire. I shutter in the night and hold myself tight... alone.

In my dreams strong arms enfold me. I moan soft and low. Strong arms hold me. Deep kisses tempt me to abandon my restraint. The warmth of your skin, the perfume of our love as we join to become one wafts through the night. One with love, one with one another... one...

Love -- the longing of unfulfilled desire; the sweet delicious imagination of a pure and untouched heart.

God how I've cried, how I've died -- I only live in you. When I'm with you, when I'm with you... I live and only then.

Smitten yes smitten and love, tender love unfeigned is written on the tables of my heart. It is madness, it is lovely, and it is love...

I have loved you with a passion written in the heat of the evening on my bed of loneliness. I have imagined... and imagination has become my enemy... enemy mine -- we are... and that is all; lonely; a passion with no release, an evening with no lips to touch, no warmth around me, oneness escapes me as a memory of long ago forgotten.

I grieve... I would give my soul to have you. Is it not price enough to pay?

Love cannot be forced; her treasures cannot be stolen. A thief of hearts is not my trade but I would trade my life for a night in your arms... A stolen kiss -- forever my treasure wrested from love's tight fist.

She guards her treasure chest well now. I shall search ever for that golden key... and want none to save me from my quest...

The Little Prince: Antoine de Saint Exupéry

This is a favourite book to read to one’s children and grandchildren; a book that can invigorate, challenge and renew the adult. The Little Prince by Antoine De Saint Exupéry is perhaps the most loved and most widely read book in the West after the Bible. The book was published in 1943 and has been translated into more than 180 languages and sold more than 80 million copies, making it one of the best-selling books ever.

The Little Prince barely stretches to a hundred pages, but what an incredible hundred pages they are. Most bookstores carry this French novel in their children’s section. The book is written in words that are simple with a poetic flow to them; it is also illustrated with more than forty delicate pen-and-ink pictures drawn by the author. It can be read in one or two sessions but takes a lifetime to fully comprehend. This is a voyage of discovery that compares in my experience, to reading Siddhartha by Herman Hesse without the sexual experiences. As with many of the great books of philosophy and religion a proper comprehension of the wisdom contained requires a child’s faith, acceptance and willingness to suspend disbelief. In the words of the author, ‘Grown-ups never understand anything for themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.’

The story begins with a pilot being marooned in the desert, which is in part a reference to real life experiences of the author who was a famous aviator and war hero. He meets a child who is the sole inhabitant of the planet Asteroid B-612, and has lived happily alone in his home-asteroid until the wind plants for him a new seed, from which springs the loveliest flower he has ever seen – a single rose.

This is the story of a boy who falls in love with a rose and lavishes his full attention on the flower. The rose torments him with her vanity and her pride. The Little Prince must leave the only home he has known to set off into the galaxy, in search of a sheep. The sheep will eat the little baobabs before they grow big enough to threaten the rose.

Understanding what is important about life and trying to find a friend becomes the mission of the Prince along the way.

It’s a trail of disappointment really. There’s the absolute monarch, the conceited individual, the drunkard, and the businessman. They are all too wrapped up in their own affairs to consider being the Little Prince’s friend; the drunkard’s tale:

‘What are you doing here?‘ he said to the drunkard whom he found sitting silently in front of a collection of bottles, some empty and some full.
‘I am drinking,‘ answered the drunkard lugubriously.
‘Why are you drinking?‘ the little prince asked.
‘In order to forget,‘ replied the drunkard.
‘To forget what?’ enquired the little prince, who was already feeling sorry for him.
‘To forget that I am ashamed,‘ the drunkard confessed, hanging his head.
‘Ashamed of what?‘ asked the little prince who wanted to help him.
‘Ashamed of drinking!‘ concluded the drunkard, withdrawing into total silence.
And the little prince went away, puzzled.
‘Grown-ups really are very, very odd,‘ he said to himself as he continued his journey.

He meets a snake when he finally lands on planet Earth. Alluding to his poisonous bite, the snake states ‘Whomever I touch I send back to the earth from which they came’ but then he decides that the prince is too “innocent” for him to do so. Right in the middle of the desert is Antoine de Saint- Exupéry who has crash-landed in his aeroplane. They seem to understand each other right away, as much from what isn’t said as from what is said.

The Little Prince tells of all the experiences he has had going from planet to planet until his arrival and what he has learned along the way. The most important thing he reveals is a secret that was taught him by a fox that he tamed:

“Goodbye,” said the fox.
“And now here is my secret, a very simple secret:
It is only with the heart that one can see rightly;
what is essential is invisible to the eye.”

“What is essential is invisible to the eye,”
the little prince repeated,
so that he would be sure to remember.

“It is the time you have wasted for your rose
that makes your rose so important.

“It is the time I have wasted for my rose–
“said the little prince
so he would be sure to remember.

“Men have forgotten this truth,” said the fox.
“But you must not forget it.
You become responsible, forever,
for what you have tamed.
You are responsible for your rose. . .”

“I am responsible for my rose,”
the little prince repeated,
so that he would be sure to remember.

With his new level of understanding, the Little Prince is at last ready to meet the snake again, but not before he passes on his new knowledge to the author - knowledge of the healing power of love which makes all things unique, and how the pain of saying goodbye is worth it if it changes how we look at the world.

This is the central lesson of the story–love and responsibility for one another. Almost the last words the Little Prince states: ‘But the eyes are blind. One must look with the heart.’

The relevance of The Little Prince is particularly important in the harsh realities of the Credit Crunch, as the prince ridicules the foundations of the modern era namely power, wealth, fame and despair through his innocence, one begins to realize the hopelessness of hope itself, for our hopes are pinned on those very foundations which, unfortunately, hold little meaning to a naive, vain rose who lies in wait somewhere for her hero to return home. Understanding life is what this story is about. The book is readily available on the Internet, and I urge you to read it. I leave you with a noted quotation from the author:

‘A single event can awaken within us a stranger totally unknown to us. To live is to be slowly born.’

D-Day: The Battle for Normandy - Antony Beevor

I have read a large number of Antony Beevors books - Stalingrad, Berlin and The Hisory of the Spanish Civil War. They are all excellent - not a word I use a lot.

This book is several hundred pages long but compulsive reading - full of fact and anecdote in equal measure. War is not glamourised nor is this book partisan - American, British, Canadian, Germans are described equally - a work of stature.

Guardian

The pleasure of this book lies in the vividness of an episodic narrative, backed up by judicious use of quotation. Moving from the weather drama to surveillance of the assault beaches, to individual accounts of each beach, to the breakout for Paris, the action never lets up.

Independent

Beevor does battle history consummately, but he does something more than battle history. His account of the battle for Normandy combines clarity and density. The narrative has a characteristic texture. It is not so much the face of battle as the very pores.

decided that he too could sing like a bird
His intro riff was a clarion call to heaven and
Then he dropped down into a minor key, the brother/bird tweeted
thirds and fiths and sevenths too, hitting staccato notes blue as the sky

He made it sing
He improvised and built his
song into a steady grind even making it swing
And I swear that I thought "this bird is messing with me"
He broke into a kind of scatting that was so joyous that I understood
The best thing to do was to just turn my radio off and listen to the mockingbird
